Nextel SMS

If your phone is from Nextel (the business side of Sprint Nextel), here’s what you need to know about using SMS text messaging with your mobile.

  • Maximum message length: 500 characters (including letters, punctuation and system-generated characters).
  • What happens to longer messages: Unknown
  • Cost per message: 10 cents per message; 25 cents per image/audio message (bulk plans available)
  • For more information: Nextel Text Messaging FAQs
  • Sending email to a Nextel phone: Use the address format [10-digit telephone number]@messaging.nextel.com
    Example: 7035551234@messaging.nextel.com

Note: Some commenters have pointed out that the @messaging.nextel.com address isn’t true SMS and requires the receiver to launch a Java application on their Nextel phone. I haven’t been able to verify that. However, you might try this address for true SMS messages: [10-digit telephone number]@page.nextel.com

Example: 2125551212@page.nextel.com

If anyone has a Nextel phone and can try both addresses, let us know in the comments here!

Nextel’s predictive text-entry mode (aka “T9” mode) is called WORD mode. Cycle through the modes in the lower right of the screen (NUM, ALPHA, WORD) to find WORD mode. Then you can enter text by press one button per letter. More on T9 text entry.

I've been sending pics from my iphone 3g to a Nextel cell phone…phone no. @messaging.nextel.com. I noticed recently that it showed as a sent msg on my computer from my Windows Live/hotmail account. It never did this before until now. Odd thing is I can delete on my Iphone but it doesn't come off my computer when I do this..I have to go in manually & delte it off in my computer..kind of a pain..,.My question is will they also receive it on their computer? Don't want it to go to their computer as it's more work for them to open up and delete off etc. Please advise…

You are 100% correct. There IS a difference between SMS and MMS. You used to be able to type your # @page.nextel.com – now it does not work….

With nextel do you get charged a fee to send AND recieve a text message? Or only one or the other?

This is not SMS. Using the @messaging.nextel.com sends a regular email or text message. SMS is something different and doesn’t require the phone to go through the java net applications to read. If you want to learn more about this just ask. pyredude@alltel.net
